Here are some of the week’s highlights in gaming, movies, and other nerd-related news:

  • Nintendo and the Pokémon Company released a new trailer for Pokémon Sword and Shield, showcasing several new monsters, gym leaders, and the new Gigantamax Pokémon mechanic
  • Game key marketplace G2A has come under fire after an employee revealed was revealed to have been attempting to pay several journalists for favorable coverage (via Polygon)
  • Dauntless developer Phoenix Labs revealed its upcoming (pirate themed) season of content titled High Skies: Fortune and Glory (via Dauntless)
  • Turok: Escape from Lost Valley, a new strategy game based on the classic FPS Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, was revealed
    • The game is being developed by indie studio Pillow Pig Games
  • Nintendo has revealed a new edition of the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch Lite
    • Priced at $199.99, the new console is focused on handheld play with no ability to use a Nintendo Switch dock to connect to a TV
    • The new, lighter console also comes in several colors, along with a Pokémon Sword and Shield special edition version that will release alongside the game
    • The Nintendo Switch Lite arrives on Sep. 20
  • Amazon game studios is developing a new Lord of the Rings MMO (via Polygon)
  • Donkey Kong 3 and Wrecking Crew are joining the collection of NES Online game available on Nintendo Switch for July
    • A new rewind feature will also be coming on July 17
  • Tetris 99 players will be able to earn a Splatoon 2 theme for the game this weekend during the game’s “Maximus Cup” event this weekend on Nintendo Switch
  • A new Super Monkey Ball game could possibly be coming from Sega to PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch according to a Taiwenese ratings board (via Polygon)
  • V1 Interactive, an independent studio founded by Halo co-creator/former Bungie creative director Marcus Lehto, has announced a new sci-fi FPS titled Disintegration
    • More details will revealed at Gamescom in August
  • Psychonauts 2 has been delayed to 2020, according to Double Fine’s Tim Schafer
    • The delay comes on the heels of Double Fine being acquired by Microsoft, thus changing publishers from Starbreeze (via Psychonauts 2’s Fig campaign)
  • Ion Fury (formerly Ion Maiden) has set a release date for Aug. 15 on PC
    • The 3D Realms developed classic-styled FPS was forced to change its name due to a lawsuit from Iron Maiden
  • The full reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s multiplayer suite will be on Aug. 1, 10am PT on Call of Duty‘s Twitch channel
    • Several streamers were invited to broadcast the game’s new 2v2 Gunfight mode on July 11
  • Blizzard’s Jeff Kaplan revealed that Overwatch‘s Summer Games event will arrive earlier than usual, and its new hero a little later than anticipated
    • Alongside the event, there will be three week-long challenges for players to earn epic-tier skins
  • Yasuyuki Honne, developer and board member at Monolith Soft (Xenoblade series) has shared details regarding a Namco-pitched EarthBound game on GameCube (via Nintendo Everything)
  • Komami has revealed the full 50-game lineup for its TurboGrafx-16 Mini console, releasing on March 19, 2020
  • Valve is launching Steam Labs, a new collection of experimental tools designed to help indie devs find ways to make users able to find their games (via Polygon)
  • Ubisoft is cracking down on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey level creations in its Story Creator Mode that are built for players to farm XP (via Destructoid)
  • NetherRealm studio head Ed Boone revealed first looks at Mortal Kombat 11 DLC characters Sindel and Nightwolf
  • In other MK news, The Raid actor Joe Taslim has been cast as Sub-Zero in next year’s Mortal Kombat film adaptation (via The Hollywood Reporter)
  • Screenwriter Greg Russo also confirmed that the Mortal Kombat reboot film will be R-rated, and feature the series famous Fatalities for the first time on screen
  • Developer Studio MDHR revealed that a Cuphead cartoon, titled The Cuphead Show is in the works at Netflix Animation
  • Patrick Stewart revealed a new poster for Star Trek: Picard, the new CBS All-Access series focusing on Star Trek captain Jean-Luc Picard

  • Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling, a feature length animated film based on the classic 90’s Nickelodeon cartoon, has been acquired by Netflix
    • Voice actor Charlie Adler revealed the movie will be available on Aug. 9
  • A new trailer for Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was released
  • The first teaser for Disney’s live-action Mulan adaptation has been released
    • The film releases in Spring 2020
