Here are some of the week’s highlights in gaming, movies, and other nerd-related news:

  • This past week saw the 2019 edition of Summer Games Done Quick, the summer version of the popular games speedrunning charity event hosted on Twitch that benefits Doctors Without Borders
    • SGDQ managed to secure over $3 million during the event
  • July’s PlayStation Plus games have been revealed to be Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 and Horizon Chase Turbo for PS4
    • Both games will be available to add to subscribers libraries from July 2 to August 5, 2019
  • Inside and and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night headline Xbox’s offerings for “Games With Gold” in July
  • Glen Schofield, former co-founder of Sledgehammer Games (Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Call of Duty: WWII) and Visceral Games (Dead Space) has partnered with PUBG Corp. to start a new studio named Striking Distance
    • The studio plans to develop a new narrative-driven game in the PUBG universe
  • Bandai Namco have announced One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows, a 3D fighting based on the popular anime
    • The game arrives sometime this year on PC, PS4, and Xbox One
  • The annual Steam Summer Sale has begun, with this year’s theme being competitive racing
    • Dubbed the “Steam Grand Prix,” the event lasts until July 9
  • Final Fantasy VII‘s Tifa Lockheart is coming to Square Enix’s Final Fantasy-themed crossover fighting game, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT
  • Hitman 2‘s first expansion mission, titled “The Bank” is now available
    • The expansion is available to players that purchased the Hitman 2 Expansion Pass 
  • Fortnite‘s “14 Days of Summer” event is now live for all players
  • Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have issued a joint statement against President Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on consoles made in China (via Polygon)
  • The first full trailer for Apex Legends Season 2 was released, showcasing potential changes for the King’s Canyon map
  • Sega and Ace Team (Zeno Clash, Rock of Ages) have announced a new game titled SolSeraph
    • A hybrid of 2D action and top-down strategy, the game appears to be a spiritual successor to the ActRaiser series
    • SolSeraph releases on July 10
  • Pokémon Sword and Shield‘s producer at Game Freak issued a statement regarding the recent controversy over the latest games National Pokédex (via The Pokémon Company)
  • In movie/TV news, the final trailer for Hobbs & Shaw, the first spinoff film in the Fast and Furious franchise was released
    • The film comes to theaters on August 2
  • The first trailer for the Charlie’s Angels reboot was released
    • The film stars Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska with Elizabeth Banks directing, producing, and writing
    • The film releases this November
  • The first trailer for The Current War has been released
    • The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison, Nicholas Hoult as Nikola Tesla, along with Michael Shannon and Tom Holland in a historical drama about the war of the currents between Edison and Westinghouse
    • The film releases on October 4
  • Paul Rudd has confirmed that he will be joining the cast of the new Ghostbusters in 2020
  • Melissa McCarthy is reportedly in talks to star as villain Ursula in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid (via Cinemablend)
