Here are some of the week’s highlights in gaming, movies, and other nerd-related news:

  • The first trailer for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie was released. The film stars Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Sonic, and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik
    • After fan criticism, director Jeff Fowler responded on Twitter that there would be design changes coming to the film before release (via Twitter)
  • Gearbox Studios held a gameplay reveal event for Borderlands 3 on May 1, detailing some of the updates fans can expect when the game releases Sept. 13
  • May’s PlayStation Plus free games have been revealed, and they include Overcooked! and What Remains of Edith Finch
  • A new Earthworm Jim game is in development exclusively for the Intellivision Amico, featuring the original development team. The game was announced by Tommy Tallarico, the original composer for the series and current Intellivision CEO (via Tommy Tallarico)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Battle Edition is the first unlocked game for Humble’s June Humble Monthly Bundle (via Humble)
  • A new trailer for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, the Castlevania spiritual successor that was funded on Kickstarter in 2014, was released showcasing the game’s updated visuals. The game will release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on June 18 and June 25 on Nintendo Switch
  • Rocket League developer Psyonix has been acquired by Epic Games (via Polygon)
  • Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is now free on PC until June 27 (via Square Enix)
  • Sean Bean’s Elusive Target character has returned to Hitman 2 from May 3 to June 3 (via Destructoid)
  • The original Star Wars Battlefront is now available with some multiplayer support on both Steam on GOG (via Eurogamer)
  • Ubisoft has added lightsabers into For Honor as a limited time Star Wars Day celebration (via Polygon)
  • Star Wars actor Peter Mayhew, known for his performance of Chewbacca in the series, has passed at the age of 74 (via Polygon)
  • Director F. Gary Gray (Fate of the Furious, Straight Outta Compton) is working to develop a movie based on the Saints Row videogame franchise (via Deadline)
