Here are some of the week’s highlights in gaming, movies, and other nerd-related news:

  • After last weekend’s EVO Championship Series, a host of fighting game announcements were made
  • SoulCalibur VI will adding two new characters, series veteran Cassandra and Haohmaru from SNK’s Samurai Showdown series
  • Along with the announcement of Haohmaru, Bandai Namco announced that SoulCalibur VI will getting a second season of content
  • Tekken 7 revealed two new fighters coming to the game, Tekken 6‘s Zafina and new character Leroy Smith
  • Arc System Works revealed an announcement trailer for a new Guilty Gear game, set to release next year
  • Janemba and SSGSS Gogeta are joining the roster of Dragon Ball FighterZ
    • Janemba is now available, while SSGSS Gogeta will release at a later date
  • Journey, the hit indie game from thatgamecompany originally released on PS3, is now available on iOS (via Polygon)
  • Anthem‘s latest update has added the long waited Catacylsm activity, originally slated to release within 90 days of the game’s release, along with new weapons and balance changes (via Polygon)
  • Apex Legends is getting a new Solos mode during its limited time Iron Crown Collection event from Aug. 13 – 27
  • A brand new trailer for Pokémon Sword and Shield dropped, showcasing new creatures and Galarian forms of previous Pokémon such as Wheezing and Zigzagoon, as well as some of the rival characters and teams the player will run into in their journey
  • A demo for Cadence of Hyrule: Cypyt of the Necrodancer feat. The Legend of Zelda is now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop
  • Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have committed to disclosing loot box odds during a meeting with the ESA
    • Several other publishers have also complied, including Warner Bros. Wizard of the Coast, Activision Blizzard, and EA (via Polygon)
  • Developer Yuke’s is no longer developing the WWE 2K series of games, with Visual Concepts taking over development duties
  • Hello Games released a new trailer for its next major update for No Man’s Sky, No Man’s Sky BEYOND
    • The update releases free on PC, PS4, and Xbox one on Aug. 12
  • Konami released the final lineup for its TurboGrafx-16 mini console, with the final list featuring 57 TurboGrafyx-16 and PC Engine games
  • Lab Zero Games’ (Skullgirls) crowdfunded action-RPG Indivisble will release on Oct. 8
  • Discord will release a new “Go live” feature that will allow you to stream games to up to 10 friends in the client
    • The feature will be available to users currently in the same Discord voice channel as the stream’s host (via Polygon)
  • FIFA 20 will allow players to select a female manager in its Career mode for the first time (via Polygon)
  • 2K Games and Visual Concepts offered a first look at the inlcusion of WNBA stars coming to this year’s NBA 2K20
    • This years’ offering is the first time WNBA players are featured in the NBA 2K franchise
  • In movie/TV/streaming news, the first trailer for the second season Netflix’s Mindhunter was released
  • The feature-length Rocco’s Modern Life: Static Cling is now available on Netflix
  • The first trailer for Honey Boy, a semi-autobiographical film written by Shia LaBeouf, was released
