Here are some of last week’s highlights in gaming, movies, and more:

  • Square Enix and Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja are reportedly teaming up for an “Souls-like” Final Fantasy action game set in the world of the original game, titled Final Fantasy Origin (via Fanbyte)​

 

  • Axiom Verge developer Tom Happ announced that Axiom Verge 2 has been delayed to later this year
    • Along with the delay, the developer released the previously exclusive documentary on the first game for free 
  • Valve may reportedly be working on a “Nintendo Switch-like” portable gaming PC, with possible plans to launch it this year (via Ars Technica)​

 

  • Nintendo and The Pokémon Company announced that Pokémon Brilliant Pearl and Shining Diamond are coming to Nintendo Switch on November 19 

 

  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus was also announced to be releasing on January 28, 2022

 

  • Monster Hunter Rise released a new title update to bring the game to version 3.0, adding a new ending to game’s campaign, as well as new missions and monsters

 

  • PlayStation Plus subscribers will get the recently revealed remaster of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, Star Wars: Squadrons, and Operation: Tango for PS4 and PS5 starting today

 

  • This year’s BlizzCon has been cancelled due to “ongoing complexities and uncertainties of the pandemic.”
    • Blizzard plans to hold a global event in its place sometime in early 2022

 

  • Xbox and Bethesda will hold a joint conference during E3 on June 13 starting at 1pm ET

 

  • Sega hosted a Sonic Central livestream, with announcements focused on the future of Sonic the Hedgehog games and animation. Announcements included:
    • A remaster of Sonic Colors, originally released on the Nintendo Wii in 2010, will come to modern consoles in the form of Sonic Colors: Ultimate on September 3 
    • A new collection of classic games including Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles as well as Sonic CD, titled Sonic Origins, is coming in 2022
    • Sonic The Fighters, the 3D Sonic fighting game released in 16, will be a playable arcade game in Lost Judgement
    • A short teaser for the next 3D Sonic game, scheduled to releases sometime in 2022
  • The long-rumored upgraded Nintendo Switch hardware is reportedly set to launch is September, with an announcement that may be coming in the near future (via Bloomberg)​
  • As part of the Epic Games Store’s Mega Sale, Among Us is now offered as the storefront’s weekly free game until June 3 (via Polygon)​

 

  • Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford revealed that crossplay will not come to the PS4 and PS5 versions of Borderlands 3 in a future update
  • Uncharted 4: A Thieves End is coming to PC according to a investor presentation from Sony (via Sony)
  • Twitch has implemented 350 new streamer tags that  allow streamers to categorize themselves by “gender, sexual orientation, race, nationality, ability, mental health, and more”
    • The update come in partnership with GLAAD, the Trevor Project, AbleGamers, SpecialEffect, and “other experts focused on the progress of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and marginalized communities.” (via Twitch)

 

  • Dying Light 2, now known as Dying Light 2 Stay Human, got a new release date of December 7
    • The zombie survival action game arrives on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One

 

 

  • PlayStation’s latest State of Play focused on the reveal of gameplay for Horizon Forbidden West, with gameplay shown running on PS5
    • No release date for the game has been set, with 2021 still being the targeted year

 

  • Ubisoft released a gameplay reveal for the upcoming FarCry 6, showcasing the new characters and plethora of tools at players’ disposal
    • The latest entry in the FPS series arrives on PC and consoles October 7

 

  • In movie/studio news, Amazon has bought MGM Studios for a reported $8.45B (via Amazon)

 

  • Amazon released their first trailer for The Tomorrow War, a sci-fi action romp starring Chris Pratt and Academy Award winner J.K Simmons
    • The action film hits Amazon Prime on July 2

 

  • Werewolves Within, based on the Ubisoft-created VR game of the same name, got its first trailer 
    • The horror comedy hits theater June 25, and on demand July 2

 

  • Disney and Marvel released their first teaser trailers for Eternals, directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland)
    • Starring an ensemble cast including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, and Kit Harington, the sci-fi hero movie hits theaters i November

 

  • Disney also released a new trailer for Jungle Cruise, starring Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson
    • The theme-park based film hits theaters and Disney Plus (with Premier Access) on July 30

 

  •  The first trailer for Infinite, starring Mark Wahlberg and Chiwetel Ejiofor, was released
    • The sci-fi action film hits Paramount Plus on June 10

 

  • Th first trailer for Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, a sequel to 2019’s Escape Room, was released
    • The horror/thriller arrives on July 16

 

  • A new trailer for director M. Night Shyamalan’s latest, Old, was released
    •  The film hits theaters on July 23
