Here are some of last week’s highlights in gaming, movies, and more:

  • Ubisoft announced that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has been updated on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5, with the game now running at 60FPS on current consoles

 

  • Minecraft Dungeons is coming to Steam on Sept. 22
  • Bungie hosted a Destiny Showcase livestream, which revealed new and upcoming content coming to Destiny 2

  • Destiny 2‘s Season of the Lost is now available on all platforms, featuring new missions, gear, and cosmetics for players to earn
    • The new season also features cross-platform play, a rework of the Trials of Osiris PvP mode, and several updates to weapos

 

  • Destiny 2‘s next major expansion, The Witch Queen, was formally revealed
    • The expansion will release on all platforms on Feb. 22, 2022  
  • EA has granted access to five of the company’s patents regarding accessibility in games, including Apex Legends‘ notable ping system (via Polygon)
  • This past week also saw the return of Gamescom, with a hybrid online and in-person event in Germany.
    • Microsoft/Xbox kicked off the event with several announcements

 

  • Strategy game Crusader Kings III is coming to Xbox Series X/S, as well as PlayStation 5

 

  • Microsoft showed updates for Microsoft Flight Simulator, including a new multiplayer racing mode coming this fall

 

  • Developer Playground Games showed off the opening minutes of Forza Horizon 5

 

  • Xbox Cloud Gaming is coming to both Xbox Series consoles as well as Xbox One for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers this holiday

 

  • A teaser trailer for the first season of Halo Infinite’s multiplayer was released

 

  • A limited edition Halo Infinite themed Xbox Series X bundle was revealed, along with a new limited edition Elite Controller
    • The bundle includes the console, a themed controller, as well as a copy of the game
    • The bundle is planned to release on Nov. 15

 

  • After an initial leak, the final release date for Halo Infinite was announced during Geoff Keighley’s Opening Night Live steam at Gamescom as Dec. 8

 

  • The oft-rumored Marvel turn-based strategy game was revealed at Gamescom as Marvel’s Midnight Sons
    • Developed by X-COM developer Firaxis, the Marvel strategy game comes to PC and consoles in March 2022

 

  • The Saints Row reboot was revealed during Gamescom by developer Volition
    • Set in the new city of Santo Ileso with new characters, the game arrives PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via the Epic Games Store on Feb. 25. 2022

 

  • Developer Tribute Games and publisher Dotemu revealed that April O’Neil will join the Turtles as a playable character in the retro-inspired beat-’em-up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
    • The game releases sometime in 2022

 

  • Developer Superbrothers (Sword & Sworcery) released a new trailer and revealed an Oct. 5 release date for Jett: The Far Shore during Gamecom’s Opening Night Live stream

 

  • Sony and developer Guerilla Games revealed that Horizon Forbidden West will release on Feb. 18, 2022 on both PS4 and PS5

 

  • The portal-fueled multiplayer arena shooter Splitgate announced and launched Season 0 of the game, with a new purchasable battle pass and season-long challenges

 

  • A new trailer for Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was also released during Gamecom/Opening Night Live that revealed the game will release in Spring 2022

 

  • A new look at the updates coming to Death Stranding: Director’s Cut were revealed  during Geoff Keighley’s presentation
    • Death Stranding: Director’s Cut comes to PlayStation 5 on Sept. 24

 

  • Fall Guys is getting a crossover with Disney’s The Jungle Book as part of the game’s Season 5
    • The event comes with new costumes and a limited-time event starting on Sept. 3

 

  • EA confirmed that Skate will come to PC on release

 

  • A statement from the Overwatch team at Blizzard has revealed that character McCree will undergo a name change in the wake of the sexual harassment and gender discrimination lawsuit filed against publisher Activision Blizzard, which named the character’s namesake, designer Jesse McCree, as an alleged culprit

 

  • EA revealed a first look at gameplay updates in the upcoming NHL 22, which sees a change in game engine to EA’s Frostbite engine

 

  • Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX, a remastered release of the late 90s Pokémon-like, are coming to PC, Nintendo Switch, and iOS on Dec. 9
  • After announcing the Halo Infinite‘s release date, developer 343 Industries and creative director Joseph Staten assured that the although the game’s campaign hadn’t been shown recently “343 developers are hard at work in “shutdown mode,” which means mission-critical tasks related to finishing a feature-complete game” (via Halo)

 

  • Bethesda released three videos showcasing some of the locations in Starfield, arriving in 2022

 

 

  • In Marvel movie news, Marvel released the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home
    • The multiverse madness releases on Dec. 17

 

  • Netflix’s Cobra Kai has been renewed for a fifth season
  • Netflix announced that a sequel to 2020’s The Old Guard has been greenlit (via Polygon)

 

  • Disney/Pixar announced a series of animated shorts focused on Up‘s golden retriever Dug, titled Dug Days
