Here are some of last week’s highlights in gaming, movies, and more:

  • Respawn Entertainment released a new animated short teasing Apex Legends next character, Valkyrie 
    • The new Legend has ties to Respawn’s Titanfall games, being the daughter of one of Titanfall 2‘s boss fight characters 
  • Respawn also announced Apex Legends Mobile for mobile devices (via Apex Legends)
  • Amazon has reportedly cancelled its Lord of the Rings MMO, originally announced in 2019 (via Bloomberg)

 

  • Nintendo and Lego announced their next Lego Super Mario set, the Luigi Starter Course featuring Mario’s younger, greener brother

 

  • Indie title Spiritfarer‘s first free DLC is now liv on all platforms

 

  • Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan has left Blizzard after 19 years with the company
    • Aaron Keller will take over Kaplan’s role as Game Director 

 

  • Capcom announced that they will bring The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles to the West on July 27 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC via Steam
    • The previously Japan-exclusive Ace Attorney games were originally released on 3DS in 2015, taking place in 19th-century Japan and London starring the ancestor of series regular Phoenix Wright
  • Free-to-play online multiplayer games on Xbox consoles now officially now longer require an Xbox Live Gold account to play (via Xbox)

 

  • Indie platform fighter Samurai Gunn 2 is coming to Steam Early Access this summer, with the Nintendo Switch release planned once the game launches in full 
  • Battlefield series developer DICE and publisher EA laid out plans for the franchise recently, including new details regarding the next Battlefield game set to launch this year (via EA)
    • A mobile game is also set to release in 2022

 

  • Indie storefront itch.io is now available as an app on the Epic Games Store

 

  • Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis is set to launch globally this June 

  • A remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is reportedly in works from Aspyr Media, the studio behind several recent ports of older Star Wars games

 

  • Call of Duty Warzone introduced a major update to the game’s Verdansk map, taking the map back to 1984

 

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone also released Season 3 of this year content updates, introducing new operators, weapons, and standard multiplayer maps

 

  • Warframe‘s TennoCon Digital Event is set for July 17 

 

  • In movie/streaming news, Sony and Disney have come to an agreement to allow several titles in Sony’s library to stream on Hulu and Disney Plus, including the recent Marvel-led Spider-Man films, starting this June (via Polygon)
  • A fourth Captain America film is currently in the works from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman (via The Hollywood Reporter)

 

  • Apple released the first trailer for Season 2 of it’s award-winning comedy Ted Lasso
    • The new season premieres on July 23

 

  • Marvel releases the first trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
    • Starring Simu Liu in the title role, the martial-arts action film releases in theaters on September 3

 

  • The first trailer for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It was released
    • The latest entry in the long-running horror series releases in theaters and HBO Max on June 4
