Weekly Wrap-Up: The Game Awards 2021 Edition

Here are some of last week’s highlights in gaming, movies, and more:

  • Fortnite‘s Chapter 3 update went live, with various new gameplay features, updated map, weapons, and cosmetics including Spider-Man, the Foundation (played by Dwayne Johnson)
  • George Cacioppo, a now senior vice president in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s engineering division, was terminated after allegedly appearing in a YouTube pedophilia sting video (via Polygon)
  • Several employees at Raven Software, the developers currently at the helm of of Call of Duty: Warzone, walked out of work on 12/6 in support of the QA contractors laid off the previous week (via Polygon)


  • New Spider-Man suits have come to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered, inspired by the new costumes appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home


  • Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection will come to PS5 on Jan. 28, 2022, and to Windows PC sometime later next year
    • Those who own either game in the collection on PS4 will be able to upgrade to the remasters for $10
      • The upgrade will not be available to those who own the game through PlayStation Plus


  • Destiny 2‘s Bungie 30th Anniversary Event is now live, with new in-game events, activities, and items celebrating the studios history


  • Everyone’s favorite lasagna loving, Monday hating feline is now available in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl in a free update on Pc and consoles


  • Grand Theft Auto Online is getting a new expansion in the form of an expansion titled The Contract
    • The expansion sees the inclusion of Dr. Dre, along with new music from the legendary rapper/producer


  • NHL 22 received an update adding International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship
    • The expansion also marks the first time full women’s hockey teams have been playable in a game
  • Thursday Dec. 9 saw the return of The Game Awards, hosted by Geoff Keighley. Featuring announcements and reveals, from several studios/ companies, find some of the highlights of event below

  • The Expanse: A Telltale Series was revealed, based on the Amazon Prime series
    • A new game developed by the newly reformed Telltale Games, with additional development from Deck Nine Games (Life is Strange series), the series doesn’t yet have a release date


  • Tunic, from indie developer Andrew Shouldice and publisher Finji, got a release date of March 16, 2022 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X


  • Falcon Age developer Outerloop Games revealed their next game, Thirsty Suitors


  • Arc System Works’ Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is getting re-released on PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch on March 17, 2022


  • Ninja Theory revealed a first look at gameplay for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II 
    • The sequel does not yet have a release date


  • Star Wars Eclipse, a new game from developer Quantic Dream (Detroit: Become Human), was revealed
    • Early in development, there is currently no planned release date for the Star Wars title


  • A Wonder Woman game is being developed by Monolith Productions/WB Games, developers of Middle Earth: Shadow of War


  • Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League got its first gameplay trailer
    • Rocksteady Games’ next gams is slated to release sometime in 2022


  • Remedy Games revealed Alan Wake II, which is slated to release in 2023
    • In a brief discussion with Geoff Keighley, game director Sam Lake revealed the sequel would go harder into survival horror


  •  Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey presented the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, scheduled to release on April 8, 2022


  • Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is coming to PC through the Epic Games Store on Dec. 16


  • Bokeh Game Studios’ first game, Slitterhead, was announced
    • Coming from Silent Hill and Gravity Rush director Keichiro Toyama and featuring music from former Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka, the horror game does not yet have a release date


  • Inflexion Games’ Nightingale was revealed, a new survival FPS/online game set in a fantasy Victorian era
    • An early access period for the is set to start in early 2022


  • Somerville, developed by indie studio Jumpship, got a new teaser trailer
    • The studio’s first game is set to release sometime in 2022


  • The Lord of the Rings: Gollum got its first trailer
    • Set before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the game is set to release on PC and consoles sometime in 2022


  • PUBG: Battlegrounds is going free-to-play on all platforms


  • Cuphead‘s DLC expansion, The Delicious Last Course, will release on June 30, 2022 on all platforms


  • Sonic Frontiers was revealed as the next new 3D Sonic the Hedgehog game
    • A seemingly open world inspired game, the Sonic Frontiers is set to release Holiday 2022 on PC and consoles


  • Square Enix’s Forspoken got a new trailer ahead of its release May 22, 2022


  • Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 was revealed
    • A sequel to the 2011 game and developed by Saber Interactive, no date has been given on the game’s release


  • A new gameplay trailer for the Saints Row reboot was released ahead of the game’s release in Aug. 2022


  • Fall Guys is getting a new collaboration for the holidays in the form of Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas


  • Dune Spice Wars, a new RTS game based in the Dune universe, was revealed
    • The game is set to release on PC in 2022


  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands got a new trailer ahead of its release in March 2022


  • Among Us is coming to VR is the form of Among Us VR
    • The standalone game does not yet have a release date


  • The first trailer for Rumbleverse, a free-to-play wrestling/melee battle royale game, was revealed
    • Developed by Iron Galaxy Studios (Killer Instinct), the game is set to go into early access soon


  • Star Trek Resurgence, a new narrative driven Star Trek game from several former Telltale Games developers, was revealed


  • A Plague Tale: Requiem got its first gameplay trailer ahead of its release sometime in 2022


  • Dying Light 2 Stay Human got a new cinematic trailer ahead of its release Feb. 4, 2022


  • GTFO, the co-op horror shooter originally announced at The Game Awards in 2017, got a surprise release after spending two years in early access


  • A first look at the Halo live action series coming to Paramount+ was shown
    • The series premieres in 2022


  • FromSoftware presented a new story trailer for the much anticipated Elden Ring, due out on Feb. 25, 2022


  • The debut trailer for Arc Raiders, the first game from developer Embark Studios, was revealed
    • A free-to-play co-cop third person shooter, Arc Raiders is set to release in 2022


  • Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss revealed a first look at The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience
    • The free demo is available now on PS5 and Xbox Series X
