Weekly Wrapup – Bethesda Bonanza Edition

Here are some of last week’s highlights in gaming, movies, and more:

  • In a blockbuster deal, Microsoft has acquired publisher Zenimax/Bethesda
    • The deal adds Bethesda’s plethora of developers, including Bethesda Softworks, id Software, Machine Games, and Arkane Studios to Xbox’s growing list of studios
  • In an interview with Bloomberg, Xbox head Phil Spencer clarified that games previously announced for other consoles would honor those deals and would evaluate future games on a case-by-case basis (via Bloomberg)


  • Bungie released a new trailer in the run-up to the release of Destiny 2: Beyond Light, showcasing the expansion’s new locale Europa
  • Former Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime, as well as a group of former Bizzard employees, have formed a new studio under the name Dreamhaven (via Polygon)
    • Joining Morhaime are former Blizzard veterans Jason Chayes (Hearthstone), Dustin Browder (StarCraft 2), Ben Thompson (Hearthstone), Chris Sigaty (StarCraft 2Heroes of the Storm), Alan Dabiri (Warcraft 3StarCraft 2), and Eric Dodds (HearthstoneWorld of Warcraft), among others


  • No Man’s Sky released their latest update, No Man’s Sky Origins
    • Changes featured in the latest update include new weather systems, creatures and creature behaviors, including a Dune-like sandworm


  • Developer Infinity Ward released a teaser trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/Warzone‘s Season Six
  • Xbox Series X games will reportedly let you pre-install them before purchase (via Polygon)
  • The upgraded version of Spider-Man for PS5, available to those who purchase the Ultimate Edition of Spider-Man: Miles Morales,  will not be able to transfer saves from the PS4 version
    • Owners of the PS4 version of Spider-Man will also not be able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free (via Polygon)


  • Revealed by Square Enix during Tokyo Games Show, the remaster of the original Nier, titled Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139, comes to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on April 23, 2021

  • Amazon has announced its entry into the cloud game streaming scene, titled Amazon Luna 
    • Requests for early access are now available


  • Game Awards host Geoff Keighley announced that the show will return on Dec. 10


  • Nintendo revealed details surrounding Animal Crossing: New Horizons‘ Fall update, coming on Sept. 30 including a Halloween-themed event and more


  • Nintendo also revealed a new trailer for the upcoming Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
    • The action-tinged prequel arrives on Nintendo Switch on Nov. 20

  • Sega announced the possible return of Virtua Fighter at Tokyo Games Show, teasing an e-sports collaboration 
  • In movie/video game news, Sega is reportedly working on a live-action Yakuza movie (via Variety)
  • Samuel L. Jackson is reportedly set to star in a Nick Fury Disney Plus series (via Variety
  • Marvel has delayed the release of Black Widow until May 7, 2021 (via Variety)
    • The delay also pushes back the release of several other Marvel films slated to release next year (
  • The Zack Snyder director’s cut of Justice League will reportedly undergo reshoots (via The Hollywood Reporter)


  • A new trailer for Disney Plus’ WandaVision series was released
    • The series is still set to premiere by the end of the year


  • Capcom released the first trailer for Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness
    • The CG-animated series debuts on Netflix in 2021


  • The first trailer for Amazon’s supernatural comedy drama series Truth Seekers, starring Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, was released
    • The series premieres on Oct. 30


  • The first trailer for The Haunting of Bly Manor, a follow-up series to The Haunting of Hill House, was released
    • The supernatural horror series premieres on Netflix on Oct. 9
