Here are some of the week’s highlights in gaming, movies, and other nerd-related news:

  • Nintendo hosted a video showcase showing off a plethora of indie games coming to Nintendo Switch during Gamescom 2019
    • Highlights included Hotline Miami Collection, SUPERHOT, Risk of Rain 2, and Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition
    • Hotline Miami Collection and SUPERHOT are now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop, while Ori arrives on Sept. 27
  • Nintendo also announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition will come to Nintendo Switch on Oct. 15
  • Sega showed off a new character for upcoming brawler Streets of Rage 4, Cherry Hunter
  • Multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight is adding Stranger Things‘ Demogorgon monster, along with characters Steve and Nancy
  • Battle-royale shooter PUBG will be getting cross-playform play on consoles (PS4, Xbox One) according to developer PUBG Corp. on the Inside Xbox Gamescom stream (via Polygon)
  • Microsoft also revealed a set of trailers and look at Gears 5, including a new story trailer set to Nine Inch Nails’ Head like a Hole
  • Microsoft and developers The Coalition also showed the first look at Gears 5‘s Horde mode, the latest edition of the popular co-op mode
  • A crossover with Halo was also announced with two Halo: Reach Spartans coming to Gears 5‘s multiplayer
  • Google and CD Project Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will be coming to Google Stadia during the latest Google Stadia Connect stream
  • Developer V1 Interactive, an independent studio created by Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, showed off itsfirst look at gameplay in a new trailer for FPS Disintegration during Gamescom
    • Disintegration releases on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2020
  • Developer Illfonic and Sony showed a quick look at gameplay for its asymmetrical multiplayer game Predator: Hunting Grounds
  • Kojima Productions showed off new footage of gameplay along with two new character scenes for Death Stranding during Geoff Keighley’s Gamescom Opening Night Live event
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ran an open multiplayer alpha for its 2v2 Gunfight mode this past weekend
  • Nintendo and Sega released a new trailer for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, showing off gameplay from its classic 2d modes with classic character sprites
  • Sega revealed the Yakuza Remastered Collection, acollection featuring Yakuza 3, 4 and 5 in 1080p 60fps on PS4
    • Yakuza 3 is now available to download with Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 5 coming in October and February respectively
    • A physical version of the collection will be available on Feb. 11, 2020
  • Ubisoft’s For Honor is free on UPlay until Aug. 29 (via Ubisoft)
  • Final Fantasy VIII Remastered comes to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on Sep. 3
  • A demo for Dragon Quest XI S is now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop
    • Players will be allowed to transfer their save data from the demo to the main game once it releases on Sep. 27
  • NetherRealm Studios revealed the remainder of the roster for its Kombat Pack DLC for Mortal Kombat 11, with the Terminator T-800, Todd McFarlaneโ€™s Spawn, and The Joker acting as guest characters
    • The Terminator T-800 releases on Oct. 8, Sindel on Nov. 26, Joker on Jan. 28 2020, and Spawn on March 17 2020
  • FEZ is free on the Epic Games Store until Aug. 29, with fellow indie platformers Celeste and Inside free next week (via Destructoid)
  • Horizon Zero Dawn‘s Aloy will return as a playable character skin in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
  • Gearbox and 2K released a new trailer for Borderlands 3 in the lead-up to its release on Sep. 13
  • Square Enix and Marvel finally revealed nearly 20 minutes of gameplay for Marvel’s Avengers at Gamescom
  • Sony has acquired Insomniac Games (Marvel’s Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank series) as part of Sony’s Worldwide Studios
  • Tarsier Studios and Bandai Namco announced Little Nightmares 2, a sequel to the 2017 indie platformer
    • The sequel arrives next year on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch
  • Riot Games have come to a settlement in a class-action lawsuit with employees (via Riot)
  • Hades, Supergiant Games latest rogue-like action game, will have its Epic Games Store exclusivity will end on Dec. 10 of this year according to a Steam page listing (via Destructoid)
  • Oddworld: Soulstorm will be coming to PC via the Epic Games Store, via an announcement from the game’s director
  • In movie news, it has been reported that Sony’s partnership with Disney/Marvel for Spider-Man films will not continue, with sony to take lead on future films (via Dealine)
  • During this past week’s Disney D23 Expo, a new poster for Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker was revealed
  • Disney also released the first full trailer for The Mandalorian, a new Star Wars series streaming on Disney+ on Nov. 12
    • Set between Episodes VI and VII, he series focuses on the seedy underbelly of bounty hunting and crime in the Star Wars universe
  • Lucalsilm president Kathleeen Kennedy has confirmed that actor Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a future Disney+ series (via Polygon)
  • The first trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp was revealed
    • The film releases exclusively on Disney+ on Nov. 12
  • Marvel also made a slew of announcements at the D23 Expo, including:
  • Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and She-Hulk will be getting their own series on Disney+
  • Director Ryan Coogler will return to direct Black Panther 2, which will arrive on May 6, 2022
  • In a surprise move, Netflix announced that El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie will release on Oct. 11
    • The film will reportedly deal with events after the end of the original series
