Weekly Wrapup- Post-PAX East 2020 Edition

Here are some of the week’s highlights in gaming, movies, and more:

  • A documentary series chronicling the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series of games, titled Pretending I’m a Superman, premiered during Mammoth Film Festival in California
  • Several new details regarding the Xbox Series X were revealed, including the system’s reported specs, Smart Delivery system for cross-generational games, and Game Pass plans (via Xbox)
  • Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Project Red confirmed that they will be participating in Xbox’s Smart Delivery system, which will allow anyone who purchased the Xbox One version of Cyberpunk to upgrade to the Series X version for free
  • Publisher Devolver Digital announced Disc Room, a roguelike action gare from developers Kitty Calis, Jan Willem Nijman, Terri Vellmann, and Doseone
    • The game was playable for the first time at this year’s PAX East convention
  • Microsoft revealed March’s free Games with Gold, including Batman: The Enemy Within, Shantae: 1/2 Genie Hero, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, and Sonic Generations
  • Developer Crema, the team behind Pokémon-inspired MMO Temtem, detailed the game’s roadmap for 2020 (via Crema)
  • A Mardi Gras-themed event has launched for Overwatch, bringing limited-time character skins, sprays, and more through winning games
    • Overwatch‘s new Experiemental Mode is now live as well
  • Capcom has teased that a demo for the upcoming Resident Evil 3 remake will release soon
  • Bungie has confirmed that Trials of Osiris, a popular PvP mode from the original Destiny, will return in Destiny 2 in early March
  • Developer PlatinumGames, hot on the heels of its Wonderful 101 Remastered Kickstarter, have announced a new game currently titled Project G.G
    • The new title will be directed by Hideki Kamiya (Okami, Bayonetta) and be self-published
  • PlatinumGames also announced development of a new studio in Tokyo, Japan as the developer expands into “live ops game development” (via Polygon)
  • Sony revealed March’s free game for PlayStation Plus subscribers, which will be Shadow of the Colossus and Sonic Forces
  • Developer/publisher Yacht Club Games held it’s second “Yacht Club Presents” announcement stream, showing off several updates including:
  • A new trailer for Cyber Shadow, developed by Mechanical Head Studios and published by Yacht Club
    • The game is set to release in Fall 2020 on PC,
  • Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, a dungeon-crawling puzzle game starring Shovel Knight, was announced as well
  • A new update for Star Wars Battlefront 2, titled The Age of Rebellion”, was released that includes new maps, characters, weapons, and more
  • Blizzard revealed new details regarding Diablo 4, including changes to its UI, adding couch co-op, and a new seamless transition from mouse and keyboard to controller on PC (via Blizzard)
  • The Pokémon Company have revealed a new mythical creature for Pokémon Swortd and Shield, a dark- and grass-type named Zarude
    • More information on the release of the new Pokémon will arrive soon
  • The first footage of The Behemoth’s Alien Hominid Invasion was released, with the game being playable during PAX East 2020
  • Developer Harmonix (Rock Band series) revealed their latest game, a music-mixer DJ game titled Fuser
    • The game was playable for the first time at PAX East 2020
  • A limited-time event for Apex Legends has begun, titled the System Override Collection Event
    • The event includes a new mode called Deja Loot, new character skins, and more
  • Platform-fighter Brawlhalla has added Tomb Raider‘s Lara Croft as a playable fighter
  • Borderlands 3’s next expansion was revealed, a Lovecraft-inspired DLC titled Guns, Love, and Tentacles
    • The game’s Spring content roadmap was also revealed at PAX East (via Gearbox)
  • Larian Studios also revealed debut gameplay for Baldur’s Gate 3 at PAX East
  • GDC 2020 in San Francisco has been postponed from March to summer after several large companies pulled out of the event due to coronavirus/COVID-19 concerns (via Polygon)
  • In TV/streaming news, HBO released a series of hidden trailers for Westworld ahead of its Season 3 debut on March 15th
  • The reveal trailer for Candyman, a followup the the original horror film from 1992, was released
    • Written and produced by Jordan Peele, the film hits theaters on June 12th
  • It has been reported that Steven Spielberg has pulled out of directing the next Indiana Jones movie, with director James Mangold (Ford v. Ferrari, Logan) in talks to replace Spielberg (via Variety)
  • Director Colin Trevorrow revealed the title of the next Jurassic World movie, Jurassic World: Dominion
    • The next entry in the franchise is sscheduled for Summer 2021
  • Teaser posters for the Monster Hunter live-action movie were released, showing action stars Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa with the game’s famous sword and bow
    • The film, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil series) is set for release on Sept. 4th
